How to Remove an AC Clutch in a Suburban

The air conditioner clutch is electromagnetic and is designed to turn the air conditioner compressor on when it receives the correct voltage from the power train control module. A faulty clutch will cause the air conditioner to not run properly. It can be replaced in a matter of minutes. Always remember to use the Ford specialty compressor tool to assist in making the task easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Line wrench set
  • Air conditioner compressor tool
  • Park the truck on a flat and level surface. Open the hood for access to the engine compartment.

  • Locate the tensioner pulley on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Place a socket wrench over the bolt and push it clockwise to release the tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the air conditioner pulley. The air conditioner pulley will be on the top of the engine compartment, above the tensioner pulley.

  • Unscrew the bolt in the middle of the pulley with a socket wrench to remove the pulley. Place the pulley to the side.

  • Place the air conditioner compressor tool into the slots on the clutch. Thread the tool with an open-faced wrench until it is flush with the clutch.

  • Tighten the center screw on the clutch removal tool with a socket wrench. Turn the bolt until the clutch falls off the air conditioner unit.
