How to Clean a Ford Turbo Diesel 6-Liter Motor

The Ford Turbo 6-liter diesel motor is used in Ford's Super Duty line of trucks. The F-series is equipped with the 6.0-liter, 8-cylinder motor along with certain Econoline vans. You may need to clean your current motor for optimal performance or an old motor that you are rebuilding. It is important to learn the safe and proper way to clean the motor to avoid damage to the unit and ensure all rust and debris is removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Wire brush
  • Rags
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • WD-40
  • Turn the motor off and allow it to cool. If the Ford was recently driven, allow a full hour for proper cool down.

  • Scrub the motor with a wire brush. This will eliminate the buildup of carbon and debris. Use a rag to wipe away the broken up deposits. Continue to scrub and wipe the motor until all large deposits are visibly gone. For stubborn deposits, dip the wire brush into hot water. This will help soften the deposits.

  • Clean the remaining debris and dirt with carburetor cleaner. Spray the carburetor cleaner onto the surface of the motor. Use a rag to make sure the cleaner reaches all parts of the motor, including small crevices and corners. Leave the cleaner to soak into the surface for five minutes.

  • Dip the wire brush into some warm water to remove any debris that remains on the brush. Clear the motor of the cleaner and remaining debris with the wire brush and rag. Rinse the rag in the warm water and wipe the motor clean. Continue this process until the motor is visibly clean.

  • Allow the motor to air dry or dry it with a lint-free towel. To prevent future rust and caked on carbon, pre-treat the motor with WD-40. Spray the lubricant onto the motor surface.
