What Type of Oil Does a Chevy Tracker 5 Speed Transmission Take?

A Chevrolet Tracker's five-speed transmission is filled with many moving gears and other components. Due to this constant movement, the transmission requires a special lubricant. Chevrolet recommends only one type of gear oil for the Tracker's five-speed transmission.

Type

  • Chevrolet recommends only synchromesh transmission fluid for the Tracker's five-speed transmission. This is available at many parts stores, or you can purchase the General Motors brand at the dealership.

Capacity

  • Putting the correct amount of fluid in the five-speed transmission is nearly as important as the correct type. Four-wheel drive Trackers require 1.6 quarts of fluid, while two-wheel drive versions have a 2.0-quart capacity.

Intervals

  • To keep the manual transmission clean and the fluid fresh, the manual transmission fluid needs periodic replacement. GM recommends replacement of this fluid at every 30,000 miles.

Substitutes

  • There are many different brands of manual transmission fluid beside the GM brand. As long as the bottle of synchromesh transmission fluid has "Meets or exceeds General Motors Specification No. 998564," it is an acceptable substitute.
