How to Locate the Airbag Module on a Pontiac G6

Most models of the Pontiac G6 come standard with air bags for both the driver and the passenger. The driver's air bag is mounted on the steering wheel, and the one on the passenger's side is in the vicinity of the glove compartment. Exactly how the air bag modules are mounted depends on the year of the car. Knowing exactly where and how these modules are mounted is important if you need to remove one of the them. They are both under tremendous pressure, so you must use caution.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdrivers
  • Small punch
  • Trim stick
  • Turn the steering wheel so the car's front wheels are facing forward. Lock the steering wheel/ignition switch with the key.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable, loosening its clamp nut with your wrench. Wait two minutes for the backup power to run out to depower the air bags.

  • Insert a small flat-head screwdriver into each of the four corner slots in the back of the steering wheel if you have a 2005 G6 or older. Turn the screwdriver in the slot and pull that corner of the airbag module toward you. Repeat for the other slots.

  • Insert a thin rod or punch into the hole on one side of the wheel if the G6 is a 2006 or later model, releasing that retainer. Repeat for the retainer on the other side.

  • Open the passenger's side door. Pry off the end cap on the passenger's side of the dashboard, using a trim stick. Separate the insulator from the lower dash.

  • Open up the glove box and remove the screws at the top corners of the glove box opening, using your screwdriver. The passenger air bag module and its fasteners are located above where the glove box was.
