How to Install an After Market Stereo in a Mercedes MI

Replacing the factory stereo on your Mercedes Benz ML sports utility vehicle can be an easy way to improve the audio quality of your factory stereo speakers and expand the ways you can listen to music. If your ML did not come with a CD changer, satellite radio or iPod input from the factory, for example, you can purchase an aftermarket car stereo to replace the factory unit. There are many aftermarket options available, many of which can give you the same modern features found on most new car stereos today.

Things You'll Need

  • Car stereo removal tool
  • Mercedes ML wiring harness
  • Remove the factory stereo unit by using a car stereo removal tool or any factory removal tool that may have been included with the vehicle for security purposes.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness at the rear of the factory stereo as you pull the factory stereo unit out of its slot in the dashboard.

  • Connect the Mercedes ML wiring harness to your aftermarket car stereo unit. This wiring harness is designed to match the aftermarket head unit's wiring to the factory stereo wiring that your Mercedes ML has out of the factory.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the receiving wiring harness that is connected to your factory audio system's wiring, then push the aftermarket car stereo unit into the dashboard. Car stereos are contained in a unit known as a "DIN," which has a metal cage on its interior that secures and houses the stereo head unit. Push your aftermarket head unit into the DIN until you hear a faint click, which indicates that it is securely installed into the DIN slot.
