How to Replace the Power Steering Pressure Switch on a 1995 Ford Ranger

Some power-steering pumps have a mechanical power-steering pressure switch installed between the pressure hose and the power-steering gear housing. The 1995 Ford Ranger might or might not have a switch installed on the pump. The presence of the switch depends on which type of pump is in the 1995 Ranger; there is no standard pump, as it is interchangeable with other years of the Ranger. If the switch is present, you can replace the power-steering pressure switch on a 1995 Ford Ranger.

Things You'll Need

  • Materials
  • Box wrench set
  • Plastic container
  • Power-steering fluid
  • Park the Ranger on a level surface. Turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Open the hood, and allow the engine to cool.

  • Drain the power-steering resevoir by loosening the lock ring on the compression fitting of the return fluid line where it connects to the pump and draining the fluid into a plastic container. The return fluid line is the hose on the pump toward the front of the vehicle; the other hose attached to the pump is the pressure hose.

  • Disconnect the pressure hose from the power-steering pressure switch. The switch protrudes from the pump, and the hose is connected to the switch using a standard lock nut on a compression fitting. Loosen the nut with a box wrench, and pull the hose off the switch.

  • Use a box wrench to loosen the lock nut at the base of the compression fitting of the power-steering switch. Lift the switch out of the pump. There will be no wires to disconnect, as the switch is mechanical.

  • Insert the new switch into the pump, and tighten the compression fitting with a box wrench until it is hand-tight.

  • Connect the pressure hose fitting to the top of the switch. Line up the end of the metal tube on the hose with the opening at the top of the switch, and slide the compression fitting on the hose down over the threads of the switch connection. Tighten the fitting with a box wrench until hand-tight.

  • Connect the return fluid line to the pump. Line up the end of the metal tube on the hose with the return opening at the base of the pump, and slide the compression fitting on the hose down over the threads of the connection. Tighten the fitting with a box wrench until hand-tight.

  • Refill the power-steering reservoir with clean power-steering fluid.
