How to: Location of a 1995 Subaru Legacy Temperature Sensor

The coolant temperature sensor sends information to the onboard computer of a Suburu Legacy. The computer uses the information to determine what adjustments need to be made to the engine cooling and heating process. An error code will appear that can be read with a OBD-II sensor when it is time to replace the temperature sensor. It is easy to find the location of a 1995 Suburu Legacy temperature sensor.

Things You'll Need

  • Open box wrench set
  • Replacement coolant temperature sensor
  • Park the Suburu on a level surface. Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. Open the hood and let the engine cool down.

  • Stand on the driver's side of the car near the front of the engine. Locate the water (coolant) outlet tank that is attached to the frame of the car and is connected to the radiator by a hose and to the engine block by a thick wire.

  • Trace the wire from the water outlet tank to where it enters the intake manifold on the driver's side of the engine block. The coolant temperature sensor is contained within the small connecting bolt that the wire is attached to that is seated within the intake manifold.

  • Remove the sensor by pulling the wire plug out of the tip of the sensor and using an open box wrench to loosen the sensor body and unscrew the sensor from the intake manifold.

  • Screw the new sensor into the intake manifold until it is hand tight. Plug the wire from the coolant tank into the end of the sensor.
