Instructions on Replacing a Front Door Handle for the Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is a four-door sedan, first produced in 1983. Several models, including the Solara and Lexus ES 300, have used the same platform as the Camry. Each door on a Camry uses a pull lever on the inside to allow the occupant to open the door. This lever is constructed from a dense plastic that may break over time. Extreme temperatures and stress from use contribute to the failure. Door handles are available from Toyota dealers and independent auto parts suppliers.

Things You'll Need

  • Metric wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Remove the negative battery cable from the the battery located under the hood, with the assistance of an open-end metric wrench. This will prevent accidental electrical short circuits while working in the door panel.

  • Locate and remove all of the screws holding the door panel to the door using a Phillips screwdriver. Check behind the interior door handle for a hidden screw that is common on many Camry models.

  • Pry up the power door lock and window switch pod, if equipped, using a flat screwdriver. Disconnect the electrical connections by pressing in on the safety catch using your finger. If it is difficult to press, use of needle nose pliers may be required.

  • Pry the door panel free from door using a trim panel tool. On many models several clips will be located on the bottom half of the door panel, the quantity and location of which will vary with model year. Lift the panel straight up to disconnect the top of the door panel from the door and store the door panel in a safe location.

  • Remove the screws holding the door latch to the door using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the two rods from the door handle by rotating the door handle until they are loose.

  • Connect the door lock and door latch rods to the new door handle. Secure the door handle to the door with the Phillips screws and tighten using a screwdriver.

  • Return the door panel to the original location on the door and gently press on the door panel with your hand to engage the clips on the lower half of the door. Insert and tighten all of the Phillips screws removed in Step 2.

  • Reconnect the electrical connections for the door lock and windows, if so equipped. Replace the switch assembly in the door and press down until it locks into place.

  • Replace the negative battery terminal and tighten with the aid of an open-end metric wrench.
