How to Remove Run Flat Pax Tires From Rims

The Honda Odyssey and some Nissans are the only vehicles that come with PAX tires. Michelin designed the PAX system to make the vehicle safer in case a tire fails. The tire and wheel combination is designed with a plastic buffer ring on the inside of the tire. When a tire blows out, the vehicle rides this buffer and the driver can maintain control of the car. If you ever have to get a tire fixed and you have the PAX system, you will find that most tire stores will be unable to help you. When a tire fails with the PAX system, it is usually necessary to replace the entire tire and wheel, which can be costly. When changing wheels on a vehicle using the PAX system, you must remove the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) unit so that you can install them in your new wheels. Once you replace the PAX system with new wheels and tires, tire shops can help you repair tires in the future.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve core removal tool
  • Carpet razor knife
  • Rim clamp tire machine
  • 13 mm end wrench
  • Remove the valve core from the valve stem to let out the air.

  • Place the PAX wheel and tire on the tire machine and secure with the clamps of the machine.

  • Cut the lower and upper sides of both side walls of the tire completely with the carpet razor knife by. Pull up on the side wall of the tire as you cut and remove the bulk of the tire from the rim. You will be left with the plastic buffer and the two side bead areas of the tire.

  • Remove the TPMS valve stem with the 13mm end wrench.

  • Break the tire beads one side at a time with the tire machine bead breaker. It will be difficult to break the beads but keep turning the wheel while breaking all around. You will be able to see the progress since you have removed the majority of the tire already.

  • Remove the beads with the tire machine removal arm.
