How to Attach a Roof Rack

A roof rack provides extra storage space for luggage and other objects, as well as bicycles and other recreational tools. To sturdy your personal items to the rack, the rack must be properly secured or screwed into the roof of the car. The roof rack then becomes a part of the vehicle. Racks are, however, removable but holes will be left in the roof of your car when the rack is removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap and water
  • Towel
  • Roof rack
  • Measuring tape
  • Automatic drill with a metal short bit or drill stop
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Clean and dry the roof of the car. Use soap and water to clean, and a dry towel to remove any moisture.

  • Build the rack. The specific directions for building the rack vary, see instructions for specifics. Many roof racks come with the two crossbars and two siderails. Lay the crossbars horizontally on the ground. Lay the siderails vertically so they are aligned with the sides of the crossbars. Then slide the siderails into the tracks on the crossbars. Turn the knobs on each end of the siderails to secure them to the crossbars.

  • Place the roof rock once it is built on the roof. Adjust the roof rack so it is perfectly centered on the car's roof. Then use a measuring tape to measure the distance between the siderails and the sides of the roof, and the crossbars and the front and rear of the roof. There must be an equal amount of distance between each side and the edge of the roof.

  • Drill the mounting screws through the siderail mount into the roof of the car. You can drill the screw into the mounting hole just far enough to make an indentation into the roof the vehicle. Then remove the rack and continue to drill the screw hole into the roof. Unscrew the screw from the roof, replace the rack and screw the screws back in with a Philips screwdriver.

  • Peel away the plastic backing from the no slip strips. These strips help to keep any luggage or other items from slipping around and damaging the roof while placed on the roof rack. Stick each strip vertically along the vehicle, or from front to back, in between the two cross rails. Separate and place the strips evenly.
