How to Change a Power Steering Fluid Hose on a 2000 Nissan Maxima

If you notice a puddle of red liquid leaking from underneath your 2000 Nissan Maxima, you have a problem with your power steering system. This system uses power steering fluid (colored red for easy identification) under pressure to help you turn your Maxima's front wheels. Changing the power steering fluid hose on a 2000 Nissan Maxima isn't difficult and can be performed by even a shade tree mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wooden block or brick
  • Drain pan
  • Screwdriver
  • Utility knife
  • Shears
  • Power steering hose
  • Power steering fluid
  • Park the Nissan Maxima where you will be changing the power steering hose on a flat and level location. Turn off the engine. Place the car into park. Remove the keys from the ignition.

  • Locate the front jack points for the vehicle. These are typically located behind the front wheel or underneath the front doors. Your Nissan Maxima owner's manual will give you the exact location. Insert a jack underneath the vehicle and raise it up enough for you to work under. When the vehicle is at the proper height, insert jack stands underneath the mounting point and set them at the height to support the vehicle. Place a wood block or brick behind the rear wheels of the vehicle.

  • Locate the power steering pump mounted towards the rear of the engine. It is a small black box, about five inches on each side. There will be a belt from the engine passing into the box.

  • Place a drain pan underneath the pump.

  • Loosen the clamps on either end of the hoses with a screwdriver. Pull out the end of the hose nearest to the pump. Allow the fluid inside to drain into the drain pan. Pull the other end of the hose off the engine.

  • Cut the new power steering hose to the proper length with a pair of shears. Spread a few drops of power steering fluid on the inside of both ends of the hose. Slip the hose onto the nipple on the fuel pump. Secure with the clamp. Secure the other end onto the engine. Secure this end into place with a clamp as well.

  • Refill the power steering fluid reservior to the proper level.
