How to Install Brake Pads on the Rear of a Polaris

It is important to keep the brakes on your Polaris in proper working order at all times to ensure your safety while operating this all-terrain vehicle. When inspecting your brakes to determine if they need replacement, look and listen for the following warning signs. If you hear squealing or grinding noises when you brake, if the brake pads appear to be worn down, or if your brakes fail to operate and you cannot come to a full stop it is a good time to perform a brake replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • 2 Jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Ratchet and socket
  • Large C-clamp
  • Raise the rear end of your Polaris with the jack and place the jack stands on both sides of the rear axle. Lower your Polaris onto the stands.

  • Go to the right side of your Polaris and remove the lug nuts on the rear wheel with the lug wrench. Slide the wheel off and locate the caliper beside the sprocket.

  • Remove the two caliper retaining bolts that hold the caliper to the drive shaft by twisting them counterclockwise with the ratchet and socket until they come out. Pull the caliper out of the assembly.

  • Compress the caliper with the C-clamp. Pull out the original brake pads manually and insert new ones in their place.

  • Reverse the disassembly procedures you followed above to put the brake assembly and wheel back together. Lower your Polaris to the ground with the jack and set the jack stands aside.

  • Pump your brakes five times to seat the pads correctly.
