How to Remove Plastic Auto Fasteners

As a car owner, you may opt to perform your own maintenance from time to time. If you need to remove your car fender to reach the inner liner, you must first remove the plastic fasteners holding the two together. These disposable rivets are designed with ribbed shanks, enabling a more secure hold on the inner liner or the car fender. Though some types of push fasteners come off without a problem, others are designed to be extra secure, making their removal more challenging.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Locate the fastener's pin on the center of its head. Slide a small flat-head screwdriver beneath the head of the pin and pull up to pry it out of its hole if there is no slot for a screwdriver on its head.

  • Pull the pin out completely with your fingertips.

  • Rotate the pin counterclockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver if your fastener's head has a slot for it. Pull out the pin with your fingertips.
