How to Prevent Losing Hubcaps

Hubcaps are decorative discs that attach to the wheels of a car. They are used to cover the lug nuts and other less attractive parts of the wheel. They also are a more affordable option that buying a car with rims. Hubcaps are typically held in place by several plastic snaps around their perimeter. Sometimes, after hitting a bump in the road, these snaps give way and a hubcap is lost. Thankfully, there are methods to help you from losing your hubcaps.

Things You'll Need

  • Bolt-retention fastener
  • Remove any lubricant that may be between the attachments of the hubcap and the wheel. Grease and oil will make it easy for the hubcap to slip off.

  • Sand wheels that are painted. Don't install a hubcap over any smooth paint that is applied to the steel of your wheel. This could let the hubcap slip off easily. For the best grip, the hubcap should be installed on a rough surface that will provide good friction.

  • Use a bolt-on retention feature. This feature has a threaded fastener that will secure the hubcap. This will add support to the plastic snaps that usually hold the hubcap in place on their own.
