How to Remove Light Scratches From a Car

Light scratches can occur on the paint of a car from cat prints, twigs falling from trees or sideswiping a bush. Although the scratches are minor, they stand out, reducing the beauty of the paint color. Left unrepaired, the scratches collect dust and may become deeper as dirt and grime etch into the car's surface. With a little time and effort, you can remove those minor scratches.

Things You'll Need

  • Rag
  • Polishing compound
  • Sponges
  • Bucket
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Hose
  • Cloths
  • Liquid wax
  • Remove dust and dirt from the scratches with a damp rag.

  • Scoop a quarter-size amount of polishing compound onto a damp sponge.

  • Rub the polishing compound onto the scratches, using light pressure and working in circular motions. Buff the area until the scratches no longer appear.

  • Fill a bucket half way with water and 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap. Wet a clean sponge with the soapy water and wash the polishing compound from the car.

  • Rinse the soap from the car with a hose or bucket of water. Dry the car with a clean cloth.

  • Apply 1 tbsp. of liquid wax to a damp sponge and buff onto the affected area of the car. Allow the wax to turn cloudy. Wipe the wax from the car with a soft cloth.
