Subaru Outback Car Seat Installation

The Subaru Outback is one of the safest cars on the road according to crash test ratings. While car safety for an adult simply requires wearing a seat belt, in order for a child to be safe he needs to be restrained in a car seat. If a car seat isn't properly installed, the child can become seriously injured in the event of a crash. The Subaru Outback makes installing both front-facing and rear-facing car seats simple.

Rear-Facing Installation

  • Place the car seat in one of the two rear seats next to the windows. Position the seat so it's facing the back of the Outback.

  • Thread the Outback's lap and shoulder seatbelt through the car seat as directed in the instruction manual for your particular car seat.

  • Buckle the seatbelt. Pull the two ends of the seatbelt and ensure that it is properly fastened.

  • Pull the seatbelt from the retractor until it stops, and then allow it to rewind fully into the retractor. Pull on it to make sure the retractor is locked.

  • Push the car seat forward into the back of the Outback's seat.

Front-Facing Installation

  • Place the front-facing seat in one of the two rear seats next to the windows. Press the back of the car seat firmly against the back of the Outback seat.

  • Run the lap and shoulder strap of the seatbelt through the car seat. Refer to the instruction manual that comes with the car seat for specific information on how to do this. Fasten the seat belt into the buckle and check that it's firmly secured.

  • Pull the seat belt all the way out from the retractor and let it go. This tightens the belt and locks the retractor.

  • Rock the seat to make sure it's solidly locked into position.
