How to Replace the Alternator on a 2003 Honda

Alternators are installed on almost every 2003 Honda ATV, car, truck, motorcycle and SUV. The process for replacing an alternator is a universal process for all of these vehicles. The placement, bolt size and components concealing the alternator will differ from model to model. Also the process from removing the belt will be different for almost every model. You will need mechanic's tools and a basic knowledge of the vehicle that you are working on.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Ratchet set
  • Replacement alternator
  • Remove the belt from the alternator using the adjustable wrench. On most 2003 Honda engines is a tension pulley that tightens and loosens the alternator belt. Connect the wrench to the tension pulley and pull or push on the wrench handle until the belt loosens. Remove the belt from the alternator.

  • Remove the wire harness from the side of the alternator using the wrench. Loosen the nut securing the harness to the alternator and pull the harness off of the frame of the alternator.

  • Remove the bolts securing the alternator to the engine using the ratchet set. Two bolts commonly secure the alternator to the engine and they are commonly located on the upper and lower rear of the alternator. Pull the alternator off of the engine. Replace the old alternator with the new one the opposite way that you removed the old one from the engine.
