How to Change the Air Filter of a Chevy Cobalt

The air filter in the Chevrolet Cobalt prevents debris from getting into the engine air intake system. Chevrolet recommends inspecting the air filter every time the oil is changed or other maintenance is performed and replacing if it is clogged or excessively dirty. The filter should be replaced at least every 50,000 miles. Chevrolet does not recommend cleaning the air filter with compressed air, as this could damage it. A clean air filter improves air flow to the engine and increases engine performance.

Things You'll Need

  • New air filter
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Turn off the engine. Open the hood.

  • Locate the air filter housing on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

  • Loosen the screws on the clamps that hold the air outlet duct in place. Remove the air outlet duct from the air filter housing.

  • Unlatch the two clamps that hold the filter housing cover in place. Pull up on the front of the filter cover and pull it out to remove it.

  • Remove the old filter.

  • Wipe all dust from the inside of the housing with a clean, damp cloth.

  • Install a new filter in the filter housing.

  • Reinstall the filter cover. Latch the clamps to hold the cover in place.

  • Reattach the air outlet duct. Tighten the screws on the clamps to secure the duct in place.
