How to Replace the Brake Light on a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The 2002 Chevy Trailblazer is equipped with a tail lamp assembly. The tail lamp assembly is composed of three light bulbs: the brake light bulb, rear light bulb and turn signal bulb. The brake light bulb alerts other motorists when the vehicle's brakes are applied and it begins slowing down. This promotes safe driving and visibility. To avoid a traffic ticket and ensure other drivers can see your Trailblazer, it's important to replace the brake light when it burns out.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement brake bulb No. 3157
  • Place the Trailblazer in "Park" and engage the emergency brake. Turn the engine off and remove the key. This will prevent any shifting or moving from the Trailblazer while completing maintenance.

  • Open the lift gate on the back of the Trailblazer. Push the gate all the way up until it locks into place and stays open.

  • Remove the two screws that secure the tail lamp assembly using the appropriate screwdriver. The two screws are located on the inside of the Trailblazer, where the lift gate meets the vehicle, when closed. The tail lamp assembly is now loose; pull the assembly away from the Trailblazer.

  • Locate the wiring harness on the back of the tail lamp assembly. Unclip the wiring harness and place to the side. Remove the three screws that hold the socket strip into place. Remove the socket strip by lifting up the retaining tabs. You will now have access to the bulbs.

  • Holding the socket still, pull the brake light bulb out of the socket. The bulb will come out with little force. Discard the burned-out bulb. Push the replacement bulb into the socket until it clicks securely into place.

  • Place the socket strip back onto the tail lamp assembly. Replace the three screws and tighten. Plug the wiring harness back into the tail lamp assembly. Place the tail lamp assembly back into the vehicle frame. Replace and tighten the two screws securing the lamp in place. Close the lift gate.
