How to Tow a Miata

The Mazda Miata is a responsive sports car that has been sold in North America for more than two decades. With its small, sporty frame and convertible top, it's not surprising that it is popular among vacationers hoping to bring along a touring car when camping. However, if the Miata is towed improperly, you could do serious damage to the drive shaft and transmission of the car. The Miata requires special attention when towing to make sure that it will arrive safely at its destination.

  • Rent a flatbed tow truck. The Mazda Miata cannot be towed with all four wheels on the road. The rear wheels are attached to the drive-shaft and will damage the transmission while rolling behind a tow truck, even when in neutral.

  • Lock the front wheels in the straight position and put the transmission in neutral. Hook the Miata and pull the car back onto the flatbed tow truck. Secure the wheels.

  • Rent or buy a tow dolly. If you are planning on towing your Miata behind an RV, this is the only way to tow it without damaging the transmission.

  • Lock the front wheels in a straight position and put the transmission in neutral. Lift the rear wheels and place the tow dolly under the rear of the car, lifting the rear wheels off the ground. Hook the dolly to the back of your RV. The Miata should be facing backwards with the front wheels on the ground and the rear wheels raised. Make sure that the car is secure on the dolly.
