How to Program a New Keyless Entry Remote

Gone are the days of manually locking and unlocking your vehicle by twisting the key in the door's lock cylinder. As of 2010 keyless entry systems have been around for many years and are a popular option on most new vehicles. Most vehicles come with two remote transmitters, but you may add an additional transmitter if needed. Replacement transmitters are also available to take the place of faulty, lost or stolen transmitters. Your dealership may need to program a transmitter on some makes, but with some vehicles you are able to program your vehicle's transmitter yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat blade screwdriver (Saab)

  • Open the case of the replacement transmitter by inserting a flat blade screwdriver into the slot on the bottom edge of the remote. Twist the screwdriver to separate each half of the transmitter. Find the label that displays the transmitter's eight-digit code and write it down. Position the halves of the remote together and press with your fingers until they snap together.

  • Sit in the driver's seat and close the door. Make sure all remaining doors are fully closed.

  • Do all tasks in this step within 45 seconds. Open and close the driver's door. Insert the ignition key and turn it from "Lock" to "On" 10 times within 15 seconds. Listen for an electronic tone to sound one time.

  • Open and close the driver's door within 15 seconds of hearing the tone in Step 3. Listen for a second electronic tone. Push the lock button on the transmitter the same number of times as the first digit in the eight-digit code. Do this within 30 seconds of hearing the second tone. The second tone will sound for 30 seconds or until the lock button on the transmitter is depressed.

  • Press the lock button on the transmitter within 5 seconds of completing the previous step. Continue entering each digit of the eight-digit number in the same fashion. Listen for the 30-second tone again after completely entering all digits. Enter all eight digits a second time in exactly the same fashion. This is done as a failsafe to insure you are entering the correct code.

  • Listen for a confirmation tone of one second. Remove the key from the ignition and test the remote transmitter.

  • Turn the key from the "On" to "Off" positions in quick succession four times within six seconds.

  • Press any key on the replacement remote transmitter within 20 seconds after finishing with Step 3. Press any key on any remaining transmitters you wish to program. Any transmitters not included in this programming step will not work once programming is complete.
