How to Open a VW Jetta Key and Replace the Battery

Volkswagen has used the switchblade-style key for many years, according to VW sales representative Jay Pichardo. This design allows a single unit to contain the keyless entry remote and the key blade. The key easily folds into the key fob, and flips out for use with the touch of a button. If the remote stops working, you will want to replace the battery, which is a job you can do yourself with ease.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Battery
  • Press the small, circular button on the front of the key fob to flip the blade of the key into the "open" position.

  • Place one hand on the remote section of the key fob and the other on the blade section, and pull the two halves of the key apart. Set the key blade to the side.

  • Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the seam on the side of the remote where the key blade rests when in the "closed" position. Gently turn the screwdriver to separate the two halves of the remote. One side contains the electronic circuit of the remote. (Set this part aside in a safe place where it will stay dry.) The other half contains the battery.

  • Pry the battery up with a flat-head screwdriver so it comes out from the three prongs that hold it in place. Replace the battery by pressing the new battery into the housing with the "positive" side down.

  • Reassemble the key by snapping the two sides of the remote back together and then sliding the top that holds the key blade back into place.

  • Press one of the remote buttons and check for the front LED to light up to test the new battery.
