How to Change the Spark Plug Wires on a Chevy Malibu

The first model year of the Chevrolet Malibu was 1963. Most recent model years are equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6. Older models may have V-8s. The process is the same for all engines. If you notice a stutter at idle or a misfire in the engine, you may have a damaged spark plug wire that needs replacement sooner. Buy spark plug wires for your Malibu from an auto parts retailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Spark plug wires (specific for your engine)
  • Dielectric grease
  • Raise the hood of your Chevrolet Malibu. Remove the negative battery cable with a wrench.

  • Select a spark plug as a starting point. Grasp the rubber boot at the top of the plug. Twist the boot while pulling up to remove the rubber boot from the spark plug. Follow the wire to the opposite end and grasp the boot. Twist and pull up on the boot to remove the wire.

  • Select a wire of matching length from your set of replacement wires. Set the old wire aside. Apply a drop of dielectric grease to the boot on each end of the wire. Press one end of the wire onto the empty terminal on the distributor until it clicks in place. Press the opposite end of the wire onto the spark plug until it clicks.

  • Repeat the process for each wire, removing only one at a time. Avoid removing more than one wire as this can result in confusing the firing order, causing engine damage.

  • Replace the negative battery cable and tighten it with a wrench. Close the hood of your Malibu and start the engine to test it.
