How to Replace the Air Filter in a Grand Caravan

Dodge recommends changing the engine air filter every 15,000 miles to ensure the engine runs smoothly and properly. The engine air filter is a very important component in the longevity of your engine, as it filters the air that passes through the engine. The filter catches dirt, dust and other particles and removes them before the air enters the engine. This keeps the engine clean and running smoothly. A dirty air filter allows these particles to enter the engine, causing the engine to use more gas and perhaps clogging smaller components. Replacement air filters can be purchased at local auto shops and replacement takes a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Owner's manual
  • Replacement air filter
  • Place the Grand Caravan in "Park" and let the van sit for a half-hour before attempting any maintenance under the hood.

  • Open the hood and locate the engine air-filter housing. The engine air filter is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, right under the windshield and directly above the automatic transmission reservoir and dipstick; the casing is a square black box. The Grand Caravan owner's manual provides a diagram, if needed.

  • Remove the four screws securing the air-filter housing cover in place. Lift the cover up, towards the windshield, to access the air filter. Remove the air filter by pulling it out of the casing and discard.

  • Insert the replacement air-filter cartridge into the housing. Close the air-filter housing cover and replace the four screws; secure and tighten them. Close the hood.
