The 2001 Pontiac Grand AM has an onboard diagnostic computer that stores trouble codes when the vehicle is in need of regular maintenance. It also generates and stores codes when there is a problem with the vehicle's emissions control system. This will cause the "check engine" light to come on. At this point, you need to have a diagnostic scan run on your Grand Am. This can be done for free at most auto parts stores. Once you've discovered and fixed the problem, you need to reset the computer.
Open the hood of your Grand AM.
Loosen the retaining nut on the negative cable clamp connected to the negative battery terminal using a socket wrench.
Slide the cable clamp off of the negative battery terminal.
Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the cable clamp to the battery terminal. Then, tighten the retaining nut on the clamp using a socket wrench.
Start the Grand Am and drive it around for 10 minutes. This will allow the computer to cycle and will complete the process required for the computer to reset itself.
