How to Recharge 18 Volt Batteries

A major breakthrough in auto repair as well as in the construction field is the advent of cordless power tools. These cord-free wonders make many tasks more enjoyable. They provide the freedom to move about the work site and not be hampered by cords and tripping dangers. If there is a down side to using a cordless tool, it is in the battery life. It is not very convenient to switch batteries in the middle of a job and it is frustrating to have to wait for a dead battery to charge. New quick-charging units are addressing this concern.

Things You'll Need

  • 18 volt battery
  • Battery charger
  • Energize the charger. Plug the charger's power cord into any 115 volt power outlet. Listen for an audible "beep." Watch for the charger's light emitting diode (LED) to come on. The charger is now ready.

  • Insert the battery. Either slide the battery into the charger or plug it into the charger, depending on which type of battery and charger you have. A flashing red light indicates that the battery could not be installed properly or there could be a problem with the battery. A flashing green light indicates that all is well and the battery is charging.

  • Maintain the battery. A solid green light on the charger indicates that the charge is complete. Allowing the battery to remain attached to the charger will allow the charger to trickle charge the battery and keep it at full charge. If your charger does not recommend leaving the battery in the charger for an extended time, simply unplug the battery when the charging is complete and re-install it 15 minutes prior to its next use to ensure it is at its peak state of charge.
