The serpentine belt on the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee controls all of the accessories on the front of the engine. These accessories include the alternator, the air-conditioner compressor, power steering pump, crankshaft and the water pump. The serpentine belt replacement process on the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee is fairly easy once you know how the belt is routed. You can replace the belt yourself in less than an hour.
Park the Jeep on a level surface and open the hood. Locate the serpentine belt routing diagram on the top of the fan shroud. The diagram will be a picture the correct routing of the belt around the pulleys. If the Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have the belt-routing diagram, take a notepad and pen and draw out how the belt is routed across the pulleys.
Locate the power steering pump on the top right hand side of the engine. The power steering pump has an adjustment bracket that you can loosen to remove and replace the belt. There is a pivot bolt at the top of the power steering pump, a locking bolt on the adjustment bracket, two bolts on the back side of the power steering pump and one adjustment bolt at the end of the power steering pump adjustment bracket.
Loosen the top pivot bolt head with the ratchet and the 13 millimeter socket. Then loosen the lower locking bolt that holds the alternator to the adjustment bracket and loosen the two bolts on the back side of the power steering pump.
Put the ratchet and the 13 millimeter socket onto the adjustment bolt at the end of the adjustment bracket. Turn the adjustment bolt counterclockwise to loosen the belt. Once you start to loosen the adjustment bolt, the alternator will start to move toward the passenger side of the engine. This will give you the slack needed to remove and replace the belt.
Slide the belt off of the power steering pump pulley. Then finish removing the belt from the remaining pulleys. Pull the belt out of the engine compartment.
Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley first. The crankshaft pulley is on the bottom of the engine in the center. Then route the belt across the remaining pulleys. Leave the power steering pulley for last. Inspect to make sure that the belt is seated into all of the pulleys.
Tighten the adjustment bolt on the adjustment bracket. This will tighten the belt across all of the pulleys. Once the belt is tight, tighten down the locking nut on the bottom of the adjustment bracket.
Tighten the top pivot bolt and the two bolts on the back of the power steering pump. The proper torque for all of the power steering pump bolts is 20 foot-pounds. Once all of the bolts are tight, crank the engine.
Visually inspect the belt again as the engine is running. Make sure that the belt is running smoothly inside all of the pulleys. Then shut the engine off and close the hood.
