How to Prevent Wheel Rust

Many metals are naturally prone to rust when it comes into contact with the environment. When metal is exposed to water and oxygen it creates a chemical reaction called oxidation. Rust is an iron oxide. Rust is not only unsightly but it causes serious and dangerous damage if left untreated. Wheels are typically made from chrome, which is a metal that doesn't rust. However, wear and tear on the wheels causes little nicks and holes in the chrome, and these are the places where rust will form on underlying metals. While it is impossible to completely prevent rust, regular maintenance will help.

  • Catch rust before it spreads. Inspect the wheels regularly for nicks, scrapes and moisture.. Exposed metal and moisture are significant contributors to rust.
