How Often Do You Clean K & N Filters?

Filters are an important part of any mechanical device. By removing impurities and ensuring that clean ingredients are used in the cars' drive train, the right filters can increase gas mileage, decrease exhaust temperatures, and provide more horsepower. Filters have to be checked and maintained because of the buildup that occurs due to the cleaning process. There are several filters on automobiles, including air, fuel, oil and transmission.

K & N Filters

  • In 1969 K & N Engineering began the journey of creating high-flow air filters for many applications. Originally created to enhance the performance of off road motorcycle racing, K & N was created to save the consumer money and to provide better performance in harsh driving conditions.

Routine Cleaning of Air Filter

  • Cleaning your filters needs to be done in accordance with the instructions of each individual manufacturer. "Depending on driving conditions," K & N recommends that its air filters be cleaned "every 50,000 miles." A typical OEM air filter should be cleaned five times while a K &N is cleaned once. Cleaning is a simple three-step process that involves cleaning, drying and re-oiling.

Cleaning Process

  • The cleaning process begins by cleaning the filter. K & N has assembled the perfect cleaning kit to complete this task. Use the provided soap to clean the filter. Spray the filter until it is saturated, and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Once the cleansing is completed, rinse the filter using a garden hose. Let the water penetrate from the clean side through to the dirty side of the filter. Once the filter has completely dried, apply K & N filter oil, and reinstall the filter.
