How to Paint a Motorcycle Fender

Most motorcycle fenders are coated in chrome upon purchase. Painting your motorcycle's fender will drastically alter the look of your bike. Although simple, the process requires plenty of elbow grease. The chrome must be removed and the surface primed before paint may be applied, By following the right process, though, you will have a newly painted fender that will resist chipping and fading for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Sandpaper, 180 and 400 weight
  • Paint thinner
  • Etch spray
  • Primer
  • Sealer
  • Paint
  • Sand the entire fender beginning at the top and working towards the bottom using the 180-grit sandpaper until the entire surface is dull and grey. No remaining spots of chrome should be left on the fender.

  • Apply paint thinner to a sponge and wipe down the entire fender to remove any remaining bits of chrome and dust.

  • Coat the entire fender with an etching spray to reduce the chance for corrosion and prepare the surface for priming. Allow to dry.

  • Using a paint brush, cover the fender with a urethane-based primer. Sand the fender with a fine-grained sandpaper of 400-grit to 800-grit. This will ensure a smooth surface for painting.

  • Spray a sealer onto the fender and allow to dry. Paint the fender with your choice of automotive paint.
