How to Replace a Tail Light Assembly

Replacing a tail light assembly is a process that involves removing the current tail light and installing a new one in the same place. It can be done with a screw driver and other basic tools. To begin, buy a replacement tail light cover from an auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Crowbar
  • Locate the screws that attach your tail light assembly to the frame. On older cars these screws are located right along the edges of the tail light. On newer cars they are located inside the car frame.

  • For an older tail light removal, remove the screws holding the tail light in place and keep them together.

  • Gently pop off the tail light cover, using the very tip of crow bar to gain some pry into the unit. Completely remove the unit, careful not to pull out any wires that are attached to the unit.

  • Replace the tail light cover in the identical position. Place the screws back into the hole and screw the tail light back on.

  • In a newer car, open the car trunk and pull down the lining fabric where the tail light is located. Locate the tail light bulbs.

  • Disconnect the bulbs by pulling them straight out from the housing. Some have clips that must be depressed to remove them.

  • Locate the screw attachments that hold the tail light to the frame. They are located along the inside of the car. Remove this with a Phillips head screwdriver. Then gently pop off the tail light assembly.

  • Replace the tail light and push it into position. Then re-attach the screws that held it in place. Reconnect the tail light bulbs and insert them into the mounting.
