How to Tune up a 2002 Chevy Suburban LT

How many systems and components of your 2002 Chevy Suburban LT you need to inspect and service depends on the kind of driving you do. Hard driving will require more attention and service to the various engine systems--as will frequent trips of less than 10 miles, long periods of engine idling or long drives at low speed. Either way, follow these simple steps to help your Chevy Suburban operate at optimal condition.

Things You'll Need

  • Engine oil Oil filter Grease gun Chassis grease Wheel-bearing grease Air-cleaner filter Automatic transmission oil and filter Accessory drive belt Fuel filter Spark plugs Spark-plug wires Engine coolant
  • Replace the engine oil and filter; inspect chassis and suspension grease points and lubricate if necessary. Inspect the condition of CV joints, boots and seals, and check the transaxle fluid level every 7,500 miles. If you operate your vehicle under heavy conditions, perform this inspection every 3,000 miles. Also inspect and service the brake system and rotate tires every 6,000 miles under heavy driving conditions.

  • Inspect the operation of the cooling fan. A faulty fan may cause the engine to overheat or overcool, and damage the water pump. Make sure the fan operates at the predetermined engine temperature. Fan blades, electrical connectors and wires should be in good condition. Perform this inspection every 1,5000 miles

  • Check the front-wheel bearings and lubricate if necessary every 30,000 miles. (This applies to two-wheel-drive models only.) Perform this inspection every 15,000 miles under heavy driving conditions.

  • Replace the air cleaner filter every 45,000 miles. Inspect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and replace the automatic transmission fluid and filter every 50,000 miles.

  • Check the condition of the accessory drive belt, fuel and evaporative emission (EVAP) systems, and replace the fuel filter every 60,000 miles. Under heavy driving conditions, replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles.

  • Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires and check the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system every 100,000 miles.

  • Replace the engine coolant and inspect cooling system components every 150,000 miles.
