If you want to keep your vehicle running smoothly and would like to get the maximum performance and fuel mileage out of your vehicle then routine maintenance is vital. Some maintenance should only be preformed by a licensed mechanic, however if you have some mechanic knowledge you can do a minor tune up yourself just following these steps.
Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine if you will need sparkplug wires or not, they should be changed every 30,000; 60,000 or 90,000 miles. This will vary by the make and model of your vehicle. The owner’s manual will tell you what size air filter you need as well.
Go to an automotive shop and purchase an air filter and spark plugs for your vehicle. If you have misplaced your owner’s manual you can still find the correct air filter using the year, make and model of your vehicle. Purchase intake throttle body cleaner, sparkplug wires (if needed) and a sparkplug socket if you don’t have one.
Look in your owner’s manual to determine where the air filter is located then remove the cover and replace the old one with the new one. The air filter cover will be removed by either undoing clamps or removing a screw. After you have replaced the air filter, replace the cover making sure the clamps are all clamped tightly and all the way or the screw will be fitted incorrectly.
Consult your owner’s manual and locate your spark plugs. Remove your old sparkplugs. If the sparkplug wires need replacing do so.
Find the intake throttle body in the owner’s manual and clean it using intake throttle body cleaner.
