How to Replace the Rear Signal Lights in a Honda CR-V

Replacing one of your Honda CR-V's rear signal lights isn't expensive or time-consuming. In fact, with the right replacement bulb in hand, it's easy enough for just about anyone to do. Please note that these instructions don't apply to CR-V models made before 2002.

Things You'll Need

  • #992 replacement bulb (2007 and later models)
  • #7440 replacement bulb (2002-2006 models)
  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
  • Thin towel or cloth
  • Remove the keys from the ignition and engage the emergency brake for safety.

  • Walk around to the back of your CR-V and open the tailgate.

  • Lay the cloth over the taillight cover. Then, wedge the tip of a flathead screwdriver beneath the cover's edge and pry it away from the rear pillar.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the taillight assembly mounting screw from beneath the cover. Once the screw's loose, pull the assembly away from the car.

  • Twist the turn signal bulb socket one quarter-turn counterclockwise to remove it from the tail light assembly. Then, pull the broken bulb straight out of the socket and dispose of it immediately.

  • Insert the replacement bulb directly into the empty socket and then twist the socket back into the taillight assembly.

  • Test the turn signal to make sure it's working. If the bulb lights up, screw the tail light cover back onto the assembly and close the tailgate.
