How to Replace the Taillights in a Mitsubishi Eclipse

Replacing the taillights on a Mitsubishi Eclipse is one project that takes less than 5 minutes. Driving with a broken taillight is dangerous and can get you a ticket. Replacing the taillights in a Mitsubishi Eclipse doesn't require any special tools, just a simple screwdriver.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdrivers
  • Standard 1157 or 1157LL automotive bulb
  • Tissue or paper towel
  • Set the parking brake and remove the key from the ignition to ensure the power is off to the taillights. Go to the back of the Mitsubishi Eclipse and locate the two screws holding the taillight lens cover in place.

  • Remove the screws and slip a small flathead screwdriver under the bottom edge of the lens cover. Gently pry the cover out, taking care not to crack or break the lens.

  • Push the old bulb into the socket and turn it counterclockwise until the bulb is free. Cover the new 1157LL or 1157 clear bulb with a tissue or paper towel taking care not to touch the glass with bare skin.

  • Work the new bulb into the socket and turn it clockwise until it's secure. Put the keys in the Eclipse's ignition and test the taillight.

  • Press the lens gently back into the cover until it clicks. Tighten the two screws taking care not to overtighten or strip them.
