How to Replace an Air Filter in a Pontiac Grand Prix

A Pontiac Grand Prix air filter should be changed every 30,000 miles when a vehicle is driven under normal conditions, or every 3,000 miles under extremely dusty conditions. Most people can change an air filter in under 10 minutes. A clean filter is beneficial because it allows air to flow to the engine freely, increasing gas mileage and engine life.

  • Turn the vehicle off. Don't turn the car on while servicing the air filter; if the car backfires there will be no barrier to protect you.

  • Lift the hood of the car and locate the air filter housing unit. Look for the filter in the Grand Prix at the front corner on the driver's side of the car. Look for a black box with a large accordion-type tube attached to it.

  • Loosen the clips on the lid of the housing unit. Lift the lid on the unit and push it towards the engine.

  • Take the old filter out of the housing unit. Clean out any debris left in the box.

  • Slide the new filter into the housing unit. Use a K&N filter, part number 33-2141-1 for a 1999 to 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. Locate part numbers of older Pontiacs online (see Resources below) or at your local auto supply store.

  • Replace the lid on the air filter housing unit. Fasten the clips to secure the lid in place.
