How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in an Acura Integra

Acura recommends that you replace the automatic transmission fluid in Integra cars every 30,000 miles or 24 months. However, it's a good idea to check the fluid about every 3,000 miles to make sure it's still good. Always check the transmission fluid with the engine hot, but turned off.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps or jacks
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Socket wrench
  • New washer
  • Torque wrench
  • New transmission fluid
  • Drive the Acura Integra for about 20 minutes to warm up the engine and transmission. Park the car on level ground and raise it with ramps or jacks. Make sure it's safely supported and level.

  • Place a drain pan beneath the transmission drain plug. Remove the dipstick from beneath the hood and replace it with a funnel.

  • Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the transmission with a socket wrench. Allow the transmission fluid to drain. Be careful that the hot fluid doesn't burn you. Replace the drain plug with a new washer. Tighten the drain plug to 29 foot pounds on the Integra with a torque wrench.

  • Refill the transmission with new transmission fluid. The recommended transmission fluid for Acura cars is Honda approved ATF or Dexron II. Add a little at a time until the fluid level on the dipstick reaches "Full." Remember that the amount of transmission fluid that you need to add to the transmission is less than the recommended dry refill amount because some fluid remains in the transmission.

  • Start the engine and let it idle for one minute. Set the parking brake, depress the brakes and move the transmission through the gears, ending in "Park" or "Neutral." Check the fluid level and add just enough fluid so that the level comes to 1/8 inch below the "Add" mark.

  • Let the Integra run until the engine is hot. Check the fluid level again. It should fall in the "Hot" range on the dipstick. If it doesn't, add enough fluid to bring it to that level. If the fluid is already in the "Hot" range on the dipstick, simply replace the dipstick into the filler tube. Make sure the car is in "Park" and turn off the engine.
