Does the 2003 Focus ZX5 Have a Timing Belt?

The Focus sedan and hatchback hit the market in 2000 as the replacement for the outgoing Escort. Two years after its debut, Ford added a four-door hatchback version of the Focus, and dubbed it the ZX5. The 2005 Focus ZX5 came with a 2.0-liter, DOHC, four-cylinder engine that laid down 136 horsepower. Unlike many modern four-cylinder, DOHC engines that use timing belts, which require periodic replacement to avoid having them break and possibly cause engine damage, the Focus' engine uses something a little more solid than a belt.

Timing Belt or Chain

  • The 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 has a timing chain, and there are no recommended maintenance procedures for it.
