How to Make a Deicing Solution

Deicing your car's windshield and windows in the winter is a time-consuming chore, especially when you have somewhere important to be. While pouring hot water onto the windshield may seem like an easy solution, the abrupt temperature change may be enough to crack the glass. Instead, you can make your own deicing solution using household products you may already have around the house. These solutions are fast-acting and safer for your windshield than using hot water. These mixtures also work for deicing your front steps and walkway, though hot water won't damage them like glass.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar
  • Empty spray bottle

Rubbing Alcohol

  • Open your spray bottle by unscrewing the top. Fill a third of the bottle with lukewarm tap water.

  • Fill the rest of the bottle with rubbing alcohol. Screw the sprayer top back onto the bottle.

  • Turn the sprayer upside down, then back to the upright position five or six times to mix the concoction. Spray the mixture onto your windshield. Use a light scraper to remove any tough spots still stuck to the windshield.

Vinegar

  • Unscrew the top of your spray bottle and set it aside. Fill the sprayer half full with comfortably warm water.

  • Fill the other half of the bottle with vinegar. Screw the cap back on.

  • Shake the bottle gently to mix the formula. Apply it liberally to the windshield. If the ice is really thick, add more vinegar to the mixture and try again.
