How to Fill the Oil in a Western Unimount

Western plow, a division of Douglas Dynamics, has been in business for over 60 years manufacturing a variety of snowplows. Some say that they are one of the most respected names in snowplows. Part of that reputation has to do with the way that they match mounting systems and plows together. The Unimount is used to mount heavy blades on vehicles like those that plow state highways. A Unimount does not need much maintenance, but when it does it usually involves filling the oil in the Isarmatic hydraulic unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  • Shop rags
  • Push the lift channel all the way down.

  • Select the appropriate size box wrench and place it on the oil fill plug. Remove the oil fill plug from the oil fill hole by turning the wrench counterclockwise.

  • Open a container of automatic transmission fluid and pour the fluid into the unit through the fill hole. Stop when the fluid reaches the fill hole threads. Do not overfill because damage to the unit may result.

  • Thread the oil fill plug back into the oil fill hole and turn it clockwise with the wrench until the plug is tight. Wipe off any spilled automatic transmission fluid with a shop rag.
