Ford Transfer Case Problems

The transfer case in a Ford four-wheel drive system contains the low gear ranges, which slow down the vehicle while delivering added torque, and transfers power from the transmission to the front and rear axles. Ford transfer cases can develop problems which can often be resolved via some basic troubleshooting checks

Thumping and Grinding

  • Grinding and/or thumping noises in the Ford transfer case in the low gears can be the result of insufficient, old or poor grade lubricant. Replace the lubricant and change it every 30,000 miles as part of your routine maintenance.

Difficulty Shifting

  • If you experience difficulty shifting between gears, a bent, binding or loose shaft linkage in your Ford transfer case may be to blame. Inspect the shift linkage for signs of wear, damage or lack of lubrication. Lubricate or replace them as needed.

Lubricant Leaks

  • If lubricant leaks from the output or vent shaft seals, the transfer case may be overfilled and require draining to the proper level. Leakage may also result from a clogged vent, which should be inspected for obstructions and cleared.
