How to Clean the Variable Clutch on a Golf Cart

Golf carts require just as much maintenance as any other motorized vehicle, but due to the particular nature of their use, most people tend to ignore mounting mechanical and performance issues until it is too late. One of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your golf cart running at maximum efficiency is to regularly clean out the variable clutch. The clutch plays a vital role in regulating the engine and tires when you operate your golf cart. Keeping it clean will increase speed and fuel efficiency while prolonging the life of your vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Toothbrush
  • Emery paper
  • SAE 30 oil
  • Rag
  • Hub puller (optional)
  • Expose the clutch by either removing the drive unit cover or by opening the trunk depending on your model of golf cart.

  • Remove the clutch from the engine. The clutch can be removed by hand with a bit of prying, but it is much easier to remove using a hub pulling tool that can be purchased at any automotive shop.

  • Use your toothbrush to rigorously scrub the clutch clean of any dirt or debris. Use a wet rag to rub down the entire clutch once you have loosened any debris with the toothbrush. You may wish to use some emery paper to clean out the inside of clutch as well.

  • Lubricate the base of the clutch using SAE 30 weight oil. Replace the clutch once it is well lubricated, and ensure that the hood is firmly closed or the driver cover safely reattached before use.
