How to Refinish Honda Alloy Wheels

The alloy wheels included on your Honda can need refinishing over time as they are exposed to road irritants such as salt and sand, as well as excessive brake dust build-up. These components can eat away at the finish of the alloy wheels, exposing the bare metal underneath and putting the wheels at risk of rust and corrosion. Refinishing the wheels can help protect the metal from corrosion as well as remove any nicks or scratches that may have been caused by everyday driving.

Things You'll Need

  • Masking tape
  • Masking paper
  • Bondo spot putty
  • Paint primer
  • Silver wheel lacquer
  • High-gloss clear lacquer
  • Paint thinner
  • 240 grit wet sand paper
  • 400 grit dry sand paper
  • Wheel cleaning solution
  • Hose
  • Cotton cloth
  • Clean the wheels that you will be refinishing by spraying them down with the wheel cleaner and then rinsing them off. Dry the wheels using your cotton cloth.

  • Apply the masking tape to the perimeter of the wheels that you will be refinishing. Ensure that the tape is tucked behind the metal rim and the tire's surface will be protected.

  • Sand down the damaged portions of your wheels using the 240 grit sandpaper to the point where the wheel's metal begins to show a feather-like texture.

  • Apply the spot putty to sanded down areas and allow it to dry.

  • Using the 400 grit sandpaper, sand down the areas where the spot putty has dried until the surface appears and feels relatively smooth. Apply additional coats of spot putty as needed, sanding down as necessary.

  • Using the masking tape and masking paper, mask the quarter panels, tires, and surrounding areas near the wheels that you will be refinishing.

  • Spray the primer across the areas where you have applied the spot putty and allow it to dry. Apply additional coats of primer as needed.

  • Holding your silver wheel lacquer about three to five inches away from the wheel, apply light coats of the lacquer to the primed areas, allowing each coat to dry fully before applying additional coats as necessary.

  • Spray the clear lacquer over the areas you have painted. Apply light coats to each wheel and allow each coat to dry completely before applying additional coats as needed.

  • Using a cotton towel, polish off the areas of the wheels that were refinished to complete the procedure.
