Holset HX35W Turbo Specs

The Holset HX35W is a Cummins turbocharger. In a diesel engine, a turbocharger compresses air flowing into the engine, allowing more air to be squeezed into the cylinders. Because more air can be added, more fuel can be added, creating more power.

Turbocharger

  • A turbocharger consists of a two-part turbine. Exhaust gases power one side, and the other side compresses the fuel/air mixture. This process allows the engine to burn more fuel, which produces more power and improves the overall efficiency of the combustion process.

Identification

  • To identify your turbocharger, check the casting numbers on the turbo's housing. HX35W turbos have a bolted construction, as opposed to clamped, or bolted and clamped.
For RAM Cummins engines, the casting numbers should be 3519297, 3519410, 3522778 or 3521927, depending on the year of the vehicle.

Applications

  • The HX35W turbo was used from 1995 until 2001 in Dodge RAM vehicles with Cummins diesel engines. It had a maximum boost range of 15 to 23 psi and a wastegate threshold of between 17 and 26 psi, depending on the year. A wastegate limits the maximum boost provided by the turbo charger; it helps prevent excessive boosts at high engine speeds, limiting the maximum boost to safe levels and preventing over-speed.
