How to Jump Start a Dead Battery

The battery on a vehicle is an important component of the electrical system. The battery powers the car by releasing electrical energy to the electric components of the car. To put it plainly, your car won't run without a battery because electrical energy is needed. Fortunately, you may be able to jump-start a dead battery by using a good battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Car with a good battery
  • Jumper cables
  • Get your vehicle to an area on level ground. Engage the parking brake. Turn off all light switches, but turn on the heater blower motor. Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the battery unit. Maneuver the other vehicle so it is also on level ground with the hood areas of both cars as close together as possible. Turn off both vehicles.

  • Inspect the jumper cables. Notice the jumper cables are color coded; one side red for positive and the other side black for negative. Be cautious that you don't mix up these sides. Connect the red jumper cable to the positive post on the dead battery. DO NOT connect the black jumper cable to anything yet.

  • Extend the opposite end of the jumper cables to the vehicle with a good battery. Connect the black jumper cable to the negative post on the good battery and connect the red jumper cable to the positive post on the good battery. Connect the black jumper cable of the disabled vehicle to the vehicle's frame, engine bolt head, alternator bracket or some other solid metal ground.

  • Start the ignition of the vehicle with a good battery. Allow it to run idly for a few minutes. After three to five minutes, start the ignition of the vehicle with a disabled battery. If the vehicle does not start, turn off the ignition of the disabled car and wait a few more minutes. If the vehicle does start, remove the black jumper cable from the vehicle frame and engine block and remove the jumper cables from the battery units.
