What Is in Fuel Injector Cleaner?

The fuel injector squirts fuel into the airstream of an internal combustion engine. Over time, fuel residue accumulates in the injector and hardens into varnish deposits that diminish the performance and the fuel economy of a vehicle. Fuel injector cleaner removes these deposits to restore performance.

Ingredients

  • The specific ingredients of fuel injector cleaner vary depending on the brand. All fuel injector cleaners contain one or more types of petroleum distillate, such as kerosene, solvent naphtha and Stoddard solvent. Other ingredients include gasoline additives, isopropanol, and manufacturers' proprietary formulas.

Warnings

  • The National Institutes of Health's Household Products Database rates fuel injector cleaner as slightly to moderately flammable and as a moderate health risk. Eye or skin contact with the compound may result in irritation. The prolonged inhalation of vapors or the ingestion of large quantities of fuel injector cleaner could lead to harmful central nervous system effects, including dizziness, loss of consciousness and death.

Handling

  • Use fuel injector cleaner in a well-ventilated area, avoiding vapor inhalation and contact with skin and eyes. Use and store it away from heat sources, sparks and open flames.
