How to Lift a Wrangler

Improperly lifting any vehicle, including a Jeep Wrangler, can damage the vehicle and even result in serious and even fatal injuries. Always read the vehicle's owner's manual for the proper jack positions to ensure safe lifting. Take special care when lifting large vehicles like a Jeep Wrangler, since lifting the vehicle can compromise its safety. Jeep recommends raising the vehicle only enough to remove the tire.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden blocks
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Park the vehicle on a hard, level surface. Engage the vehicle's parking brake, and turn off the vehicle's engine. Place the gear shift knob in R (reverse) for manual transmission or P (park) for automatic transmission vehicles.

  • Place the wooden blocks in front and behind the wheel diagonally opposite to the part of the vehicle you plan to lift.

  • Put the jack under the vehicle's axle tube near the wheel on which you plan to perform work. Do not lift the vehicle with passengers inside the vehicle.

  • Pump the jack until it reaches the vehicle's axle tube, but do not lift the vehicle yet. Check to ensure the jack is directly beneath the center of the vehicle's axle tube to prevent slippage while lifting the vehicle.

  • Lift the vehicle by pumping the jack until the vehicle's wheel sits at least 2 inches off the ground.

  • Place the jack stand under the vehicle's axle tube near the jack. Adjust the jack stand's height to match the height of the jack.

  • Lower the vehicle by carefully releasing the jack's pressure until the jack stand will support the vehicle's weight.
