How to Replace a Seat Belt in a 2002 Honda Civic EX

The Honda Civic is one of the best-selling vehicles on the market, regularly competing for the number one slot in the United States. There are a variety of models available, ranging from the basic Civic up to the Civic EX and the Civic EX Special Edition. Like any other vehicle on the road, the Civic's parts are subject to wear and tear over time. At some point you might need to replace the seat belts in your car. The job is simple and can be done in a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Seatbelt replacement parts

Rear Seats

  • Locate the seat belt that needs to be replaced. If you are dealing with the middle seat, simply fold the seat up and out of the way and you can begin replacing the belt and anchors. With the rear side seats you will need to replace the shoulder harness as well.

  • Pry the cover off the shoulder harness mount on the side of the interior. Loosen the bolts keeping the mount in place with a wrench or socket. Remove the bracket and place the seat belt to the side.

  • Locate the seat belt anchor, which is underneath the seat. Pull the seat forward and pull the anchors out of their pre-cut slots in the bottom of the seat. Follow the shaft down to the base. Loosen any bolts with a wrench or socket to remove the anchor. Disconnect the wiring and remove the entire anchor from the vehicle.

  • Replace the anchor and the side mount with new mounts, and route the belt accordingly. Reinstall the anchor first, bolting it back in place and replacing the wiring. Push the anchor through its slot in the seat. Remount the shoulder harness to the interior side wall, and fold the seat back in place.

Front Seats

  • Unfasten the shoulder harness from the interior side wall of the Civic with a socket and ratchet or a wrench. Place the belt on the chair and follow it down to the bottom harness along the chair. Move the seat out of the way to access the bottom harness. Remove the bolts with a socket or ratchet.

  • Locate the belt anchor on the inside of the seat (right side of the driver's chair, or left side of the passenger side) next to the console. Detach the wiring harness and unbolt the anchor to remove the old anchor from the car.

  • Mount the new anchor in place and reconnect the wiring harness. Position the new bottom harness and run the belt up to the shoulder harness mounting position on the side of the interior. Install the new shoulder harness by bolting it in place. Move the seat back to its original position.
