How to Add Batteries to Your RV Motorhome

Deep cycle batteries are one source of energy for RVs. They hold charges for long periods of time and can frequently be recharged with a generator or solar panels attached to the RV roof. Adding extra batteries enables your RV to go longer between charges, a good option when traveling in the "boondocks."

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Power drill
  • Screwdrivers
  • Ground wire(s)
  • Red/black DC battery connection cables
  • Determine where your deep cycle batteries are stored in the RV. Consult your user guide if you're unsure. Measure to see if there is room for more batteries.

  • Turn off all electric circuits in the RV. Detach the cable connections from the battery(s) and the RV. Place the new batteries into the battery bank area. If there are retaining strap or bolts, screw them down or strap them in to secure the batteries into the bank.

  • Connect the batteries to the existing battery bank by maintaining the connection between the battery bank and the RV plug-in. Most RV battery banks operate with a parallel setup -- all batteries are connected to each other and then into the RV power circuit.

  • Connect the new batteries with the red cable and the black cable. Make sure the new batteries have red cables attached to the red terminals and black to black. Reconnect the old battery cables so there is a continuous line of red to red and black to black through the battery bank. Connect the final battery to the circuit switch as was just removed.

  • Turn the RV power circuit on to test the new batteries and the battery power bank.
