My Honda Accord Horn Comes on While Installing New Batteries

If your Accord's horn sounds when you install a new battery, you need not worry about any mechanical or electrical problems with either the horn or your electrical system. When you reconnect the new battery, you ground the electrical system when you attach wires to the negative (black) terminal. By grounding the electrical system, you allow electricity to flow to each of the electrical components of the car, including the horn. If you would like to stop your horn from honking whenever you install a new battery, simply remove the horn's fuse from your Accord's fuse box, thus breaking the circuit. Simply replace the fuse when your new battery is installed, and everything will be in working order.

  • Locate the fuse box of your Accord. In all Accords, the fuse box with the horn fuse is located on the driver's side of the dashboard, on the edge that is covered when the door is closed, underneath the steering wheel.

  • Remove the plastic molded covering of the fuse box. Depending on the year of your Accord, this molded covering may have a molded handle to aid in its removal.

  • Locate the fuse dedicated to the horn. Accord fuses are labeled with tiny diagrams or names of the equipment they operate. If this diagram is too small to see, scratched off or otherwise absent, consult your owner's manual for a complete diagram.

  • Remove the fuse and set it aside as you change battery. This will cut the circuit to the horn, preventing it from sounding as soon as you connect the ground wire.

  • Reconnect the fuse when you have successfully installed your new battery.
